Divisions, people, and tickets
W47.1 certifies the company. Div 1 employs an engineer. Div 2 retains one. Div 3 has no engineer requirement.
CSA W47.1 is Certification of Companies for Fusion Welding of Steel. CWB administers it. A certified company has qualified people, approved procedures, adequate equipment, and a quality program that CWB can audit.
| Division | Welding engineer | What it signals |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Registered professional engineer employed full-time | In-house welding engineering |
| 2 | Registered professional engineer retained (not full-time staff) | Can still bid structural work that needs an engineer |
| 3 | No engineer required | Procedures and welders still qualified; engineer not on staff or retainer |
- Welding engineer: education + experience + CWB exams on the relevant standards. Responsible for procedures and the engineering side of welding.
- Welding supervisor: typically five years of welding-related experience and CWB exams (symbols, faults, QC, W47.1, W59). Day-to-day control of welding.
- Welders, welding operators, tack welders: performance qualified, periodic retests. Process, position, thickness, backing, progression as applicable.
- Procedures: submitted/accepted through CWB. Production must follow them.
- If a certified inspector also acts as supervisor, the tickets are still two different things. Lose the inspector cert and the supervisor designation with that company is a separate question — read the clause.
