09 CSA W178.2 — the inspector · 12 min
W178.2 as a map, not a novel
Fifteen questions. Thirty minutes. Tab levels, duties, exams, vision, ethics, recertification.
W178.2 is the standard that certifies you. The paper is open book and short. Candidates fail it by not knowing where things live. Walk your copy now and flag:
- Scope and definitions — what a welding inspector is, and what this standard does not cover (it is not W59).
- Levels 1, 2, 3 — competence and supervision. Level 1 inspects under L2/L3. Level 2 inspects without that supervision. Level 3 adds higher technical tasks (review of ITPs, more depth).
- Eligibility / experience — the one-year and training paths for Level 1; the extra years to climb.
- Examinations — closed book, product standard, W178.2 paper, practical. 70%. Vision.
- Code of ethics / principles of practice — impartiality, confidentiality, competence, no misrepresentation of certification level.
- Renewal (3 years) vs recertification (6 years) — work experience, vision, practical or 40 h instruction.
- Product categories — you inspect only what you are endorsed to inspect. W47.1/W59 is one category among ASME, API, Z662, ABS, and others.
